It was developed by William J. Euler, a mechanical engineer at the Evans and Sutherland Company. He was joined by Phil Parker, who came to Evans and Sutherland to work on the product. Autodesk acquired Autodesk, Inc. in May 2006.
Evans and Sutherland [ edit ]
In the late 1960s, when asked to design a machine to pour concrete, Euler (a US Marine engineer) was dissatisfied with the designs available. He decided to design one himself. After failing to do so, he turned to friends at Evans and Sutherland Company, who offered to design a similar machine. The company and Euler developed the first original pour-in-place concrete machines. Euler and Parker developed the idea of AutoCAD while working on the machines.
Early versions of AutoCAD [ edit ]
Euler and Parker had to create their own specifications for the machines. The first version of AutoCAD was a short paper that described a CAD system they called PaperCAD. The paper was internally circulated among staff at Evans and Sutherland and eventually shared with potential commercial partners. It was not published, however, until a few years later.
The first commercially available version of AutoCAD was AutoLISP, which was released in 1980 and sold for $3,000. It was available only for the IBM PC platform. (The AutoLISP product was later purchased by Warnock-Farnell, Inc., and renamed CABASy).

The unique aspect of Visual LISP is its graphical user interface (GUI), which is a Windows-based product. It is commonly used to automate AutoCAD as it allows the programmer to visually create graphs, tables, forms, and reports. VLISP is also popular in graphic design, and is used to create web sites and animations, as well as business graphics. Other Visual LISP functions can be found in the Help menu, AutoCAD menus and the DWG/DXF File Format File Load/Save Tools (see Appendix D).
