Slaughterhouse Wastewater - Compact Anaerobic-Aerobic Unit.

  • The solution was implemented in a mixed slaughterhouse where 4,000 hogs and 80,000 broilers are processed per day. This generates about 53000 GPD (200 m3/d) of a very concentrated wastewater. There will be wastewater that contains manure; this comes from the washing of holding pens, gut rooms, scald tanks, dehairing and hyde washing, bleed area clean-up and casing preparation. There will be manure-free wastewater that can be high-grease content and low-grease content. High grease content tends to come from drainage and washwater from the slaughter floor area, excluding bleeding and dehairing, including carcass washing. Low grease content comes from washwater from cutting rooms, and meat packing areas, as well as other non-production areas. There is also relatively clear water coming from cooling units, ice manufacture, canned product chill water, etc.
  • The original, treatment plant, design based on Activated Sludge treatment (ASR) system produced about 700 tons per month of sludge which needed to be disposed of. With the combined novel GWT UASB-ASR system the sludge production has been reduced to 140 ton/month, a reduction of 80%. A compact unit that combined an anaerobic and an aerobic reactor was installed. This unit is a vertical tank with an inner anaerobic tank and an eccentric aerobic reactor, both system share a recirculation, besides their own separate recirculation circuit. The biogas generated is used to run gas generators which provide about 1,000 kWh per day; this is a significant offset to the roughly 7,000 kWh per day required to run the full wastewater treatment operation. This represents a cost savings of 0.3 kWh per metric ton of treated water.
