You need to look at the developers rather than the software, there is nothing more expensive in the software business than bad code. If you pay $50 for a piece of software you get a bang for your buck, you get what you pay for. If you pay $100 and you get a paperweight, that is what you pay for. Its not the price its what the code does. If it does not give you what you want it does not do what you need it to do, it becomes like the rubber band on a finger that keeps stretching and you lose feeling in your finger, that is what you get. Unfortunately this applies to the design of the developers and not the software, as we must have commented on this before. This is not a game of luck but one of skill and effort. This means that we all need to be involved in software development, not just the guys who write it.

And the second issue is the code still needs to be maintained and maintained as there is never a problem when it is developed, that is until it is not, there is nothing wrong with adding or adding on to it. After a number of these things, we have come to be so used to this that we ignore these issues, I think that the programmers or the code has to be checked first, as they should know this.

Anyway, as someone with a good knowledge of this problem space as of late from coding in.net in C# and VB.Net for several years and now going back to Java as well. Now, there is a language called Go on the JVM and is it is getting ever so popular. This is a new one and over the last 6 months I have seen a very very good refactoring tool that is now in release 3.2.0 and this one is one of the very best that I have seen and use it on a daily basis to refactor quite complex legacy code including a system that was 150k LOC and was our production codebase. The problem is Go really is mainly designed to be a fast, statically typed and efficient language and has great support for concurrency, data structures, networking, and so on. The problem is Go is very restricted and almost makes you have to program in a different way to what a C# or Java programmer would do. For instance the syntax is almost non existent and almost designed around simplicity and performance. Don’t let that fool you it is not a retarded language, it is superbly designed and could in time hopefully become a universal programming lanaguage. Anyway, unless things change I am sure there are many Java and C# developers out there who would never use it because they have this ingrained ‘way’ in which to think and work and you have to break their habits to be able to use it at all. Regardless, if Go is seen to be succeessful in the marketplace, there will always be pressure on the C# and Java languages and this will lead to changing of ways of doing things.
