in addition to the passcode and key numbers and the word list, it has also been encrypted with a aes 256-bit encryption algorithm, which means it is possible to decrypt it. you’d need to have the proper decryption key though. you can read about it here. a short summary is: it’s a dictionary attack.
if you don’t want to use a wordlist, i’d just like to encourage you to try cracking this file, instead of just looking at the wordlist. just to see what your attack capabilities are like, and if you can crack this fairly easily. and even if you can’t, at least you’ll have a point of view on how strong the password is, and how easy it is to break. and you might even learn a thing or two.
if the installer does not find the files, it will call a second executable that will actually perform the decryption of the backup file (the encryptedlog.txt) and deliver the decrypted file as a .crack file. it will also encrypt the original file using an xts encryption scheme and store the encrypted version inside the encryptedlog.txt file. the encryptedlog.txt file is placed inside the infected computer. if the malware fails to decrypt the file, it wont be able to perform the decryption, but it can still encrypt it and perform the decryption later on.
to obtain this file, the attacker needs the account number of the user who wants to crack the game. he will then send a message to that user, requesting a bank transfer of some amount. he will then wait a few days, hoping to obtain the bank details. at the same time, he can still check for the presence of the file. alternatively, he could simply send a message on some social network that says, for example, “next week i am going to get a big sum of money, post your account number, so that i can transfer it to you”.
immediately after obtaining the file, the malware will execute the second part of the installation process. it starts by decrypting this file and moving it to the usual location (windows temp directory), and then it starts the game. the malware will then leave a message saying, “sorry, our game server is down. i will send you the game in a week. have fun!”
in fact, a full week has actually passed by. the user did not even receive a message about it. nothing? then, two days later, he will receive the ransom. there, the hackers simply show a scary message saying that he must send 10 btc or lose the decrypted file forever.
