can anyone share a link to a genuine geek girls reading list? not fun stuff or stuff for girls who read fun stuff, but something about how much geeks make them (or even themselves) feel good about being geekish. a lot of the links on the internet i found were pretty stuff like, oh, how to get hot in clubbing outfits.
while i agree that dressing the way you like can be a part of self-confidence in some people, i often felt as though being a geek was a negative self-image. it was like wearing a uniform, a black leather jacket that said, “i am not happy, do not make me happy.” i was too alienated from society, not “alternative” enough, not in touch with the information age. i was disengaged and angry and felt a need to escape into something that would fill that void and make me happy.

marbles is a gorgeous and unusual book. techno gears are cool but these marble kits are even cooler! each kit has 100 pieces, and none requires batteries. it can be assembled either free-standing or on an elastic band. the elevators are powered by gears and cranks that raise the marble cup and drop it when it reaches the top. the cranks are powered by the user pulling the levers down to let the marbles drop. because of the cranks, this design is not recommended for a child with limited hand strength. the catapult kit has both gear and lever powered elevators, and requires no assistance to operate. the rocker-effect spigot vane is driven by a crank. it does not require batteries and gives a nice zip to the marbles as they travel upward. the crankster has all of the parts of the catapult kit, but it does not have a rocker-effect vane. it is powered by a gear and crank. the zoomerang kit is similar to the catapult, but it has a rocker-effect vane driven by a gear and crank. the vane gives a nice sense of a “zip” to the marbles when they leave the vane and shoot upward. the four kits are sculpted as a single piece. while they are intended to be assembled free-standing, there is some assembly required to make the molded pieces fit in the slots that hold them together. for most kids, this is not an issue, but i would recommend this kit for someone who wants to assemble it free-standing. the pieces are slightly too large for super-toddlers, but it is sturdy enough for a 3-5 year old.
