She was selected as the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Nottingham South, to contest the February 2010 general election. On 11 May 2010, she was elected as the MP for Nottingham South.
On 7 May 2016, Weigel was appointed by Prime Minister Theresa May as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Health and Social Care. She was promoted to become Minister for Care Services and Minister for Women and Equalities when the latter two departments were merged with Health in January 2017. She resigned from the ministerial position on 13 July 2017 following a scandal in which a charity she co-founded with her husband, the Morley Health Centre, received public donations for tax evasion.
On 21 June 2017, she was created a Life Peer with the title Baroness Weigel, of Nottingham.
Her maiden speech in the House of Lords was to report on employment and the future of work in the Lords in December 2017.
In 2018, she attacked the Labour Party’s proposal to create a net migration target of 70,000 per year. She said “The Conservatives have no target. Our target is helping people into work”, also pointing out that the 2015 Immigration Act had attempted to cap immigration into the UK.
