Chapter Eight: System Level Design
Okay, this is going to be one of my longer posts. It’s kind of a review of all the chapters so far on the system design. I’ve been doing this all day and I think I can adequately summarize the chapters so far.
For those of you who missed it, please check out chapter 6.
Chapter One: Review
Chapter one starts with a review of the design goals for the system. The two main goals are to provide an easy way to do the initial CRUD operations as well as allow the administrator to create and manage custom entities.
Chapter Two: Objectives
Chapter two goes into detail on the goals that have been laid out in chapter one. The general design goal was to create an API system that was “seamless” (not implying “happy path”) as well as allow extension via plugins. The chapters goes into the details of these.
Chapter Three: Best Practices
Chapter three has many of the best practices built in. The first thing is to avoid the use of static classes in your system, use an ORM to manage the database. The ORM should be used as a “wrapper” around the database. It should manage the work associated with querying the database (through caching and other techniques) and it should offer a means of modifying your database through an API. The reason for this is that it will keep your code “green”.
