AutoCAD was developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU) in Houghton, Michigan, by a team of seven engineers and 10 others from the university’s Mechanical Engineering Department (the author of AutoCAD, and a member of the AutoCAD team). These ten engineers, under the leadership of Charles Parker, used the supervisory computer’s display terminal to create geometric figures on the computer screen, based on their own hand drawings and handwritten notes. They would then edit, view, measure, and scale these figures on the computer screen. In order to finish their design, they would enter the specifications for their product into the computer by hand. After receiving an approval signal, they would store the specifications in memory for later retrieval by the computer.
Through collaboration with a group of software developers at the University of Illinois, the original design was rewritten in assembly language, and then converted to BASIC for the 1981 Macintosh computer. The first beta release of AutoCAD was released in November 1982 for the Apple II, a big improvement over the 1982 original release on the PET.
The application was bundled with a text editor, a drawing editor, a plotter, a paint program, and sample files. While the free demo version of AutoCAD allowed drawing only on a single 2.5-inch floppy disk, the full version of AutoCAD allowed drawing of objects on a 2-inch, 5-1/4-inch, or 8-1/2-inch floppy disk. The 5.25-inch disk drive was optional for the last two types of disks. It was not possible to draw on a magnetic tape; only on paper or on a graphics tablet. The 5.25-inch diskette was the only output medium for AutoCAD, and a hard copy printout was required.
The program’s original development tools were large and unwieldy. To make the tools smaller and easier to use, a laser was attached to the graphics terminal. The program’s menu was initially full of options that were either keyboard-generated or hard-wired into the terminal.
The main purpose of AutoCAD was to offer a more sophisticated alternative to drafting and design work done on paper. The program was originally sold at $2,400, but due to its low price, demand was high.
