Is there anyone, anywhere, that hasn’t played Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III? There’s people out there, I tell ya.
There are folks who haven’t picked up Ultimas, yet still find their way to the good ol’ Ruins of Prospero from time to time. There are people who’ve never played the original Dawn of War games but still manage to pick up wads of Space Marines every now and then. And, there are a few… no, well, not really, there’s just me and a handful of others that have managed to avoid spoiling their experience as a result.

Finished… and not so happy.
I really wanted to like this game. It was fun. But combat was so underwhelming. I’m not one of these people who feel like they’ve got to be in the perfect position, in which you’re only going to be hit by a single bullet. I can’t hit a target at a certain distance or at a certain angle. I’m a target, and I’m firing at you. And you’re moving. And then you’re shooting back at me.
Maybe this is game design, to make combat actually challenging? But it’s also an easy way to not have to be bothered with actually learning how to play the game. “Just shoot everything”, which doesn’t work in real life.
So, I started grinding a weak sword, and I’m attacking an enemy. He turns around to face me. I’ve got an extra second of reaction time. I can turn myself around and attack him from behind. I can miss and shoot him at a high rate of fire. I’m going to hit him in the back and get some of the second dice. See, it’s not that hard.
But there are no tactics. No balance. No strategy. It’s just another bullet sponge.
In the end, I found some weird new ability which let me dodge by jumping into the air. I guess I should have kept that new ability.
I’m a lot of things, but I’m not a semi-realistic shooter.

The reviewers definitely nailed it. My overall experience was one of a grinding, repetitive game. I was fighting the same type of enemies in the same type of terrain. I’m not one to complain, but I think it’s worth noting. It was fun to gain new abilities, but I never really felt like I was doing anything special. I felt like I was “grinding” my way through.
No matter the difficulty, there was always some new weapon or piece of equipment to find. I loved that they made the equipment extremely varied.

After years of focusing on fashion and YA literature, novelist Susan Greif-Irwin is about to create a new TV drama for Amazon: a science-fiction romance set in a distant future.
The writer is developing a show about “an adventurous mother with a genius child who has to navigate a future where women no longer have rights.”
Most intriguingly, she says it’s “women in general” who are the protagonists — a future where women are no longer divided by social status or biology. (The male lead is a man, but he’s not an “advocate” — he’s a teacher.)
In a background video, the screen shows scenes of a world founded by women, a world where a patriarchal system is a thing of the past. (The cast also includes male and female children.) Greif-Irwin describes the early days of civilization, when people first recognized that they were all people, not just men.
There was a less authoritarian response to an environmental crisis: “It’s something that I actually think could be a future because in the early days of civilization when you faced environmental crises people did have an activist response. There was a recognition that we could collapse the forests and do something about this.”
To test the trend, Greif-Irwin has written a “sort of science-fiction version of the Cinderella fairytale” set in a future utopian world, where families can choose how their child will be “parachuted” at birth. She explains that it goes like this:
