count 3 is the same as count 2, only with the hi-hat, but with a fill instead of the note played on the cymbal. to play the fill, begin each stroke of the hi-hat 1/2 beat before your snare drum hit. start slowly and once youve done the fill, stop and play the snare drum note. if youre playing an open-handed snare drum, make sure your arm is as close to the drum skin as possible to minimize the distance the sound has to travel. play a fill every 4 beats.

exercise #5 and #6 are two closely related exercises that can be played together or separately. exercises 5 & 6 are where youll begin to play ghost notes. but before we get started, practice exercise #4 a few times to see if youre comfortable with the strokes. youll notice that youll be playing ghost notes over the hi-hat. with a little practice, youll be playing ghost notes on the e and ah of the snare drum notes. but because the hi-hat has a 4/4 feel, its easiest to play ghost notes on the e of the count. play exercise #5 slow and accented. play the snare drum note on the e of the count and play ghost notes on the e of the following count (1 and 3), and e of the following count (2 and 4).
