using the mplus syntax provided by masel (see references therein) we ran lisrel models for each trust. model fit was assessed using three widely accepted fit indices: chi-square [ 31 ], robust rmsea [ 32 ], and cfi [ 33 ].

lisrel consistently produced cross-loadings over.15 in the uk and us data. we were interested to know whether or not these items had cross-loadings above the recommended.15. although only two cross-loadings were greater than.20, two items had cross-loadings of.15 or greater. even though these nine items load on to factors other than the intended ones, there does not appear to be any illogical pattern to these factor loadings. there were more items which loaded on to more than one factor, but only one item loaded on to more than 3 factors, and only one factor was loaded on to more than 8 factors. the results from the lisrel analyses support the original cfa.

two initial latent variables were hypothesized, based on the theoretical models of cheung and lau [ 17 ] and wong et al.[ 18 ]. the first, efficacy, described the perceptions of efficacy of behaving well and of being observed behaving well, and was based on the 11 items on the ipsbq. the second, behavior change, described the extent to which respondents felt that they would change their behavior if they were observed behaving well.
