I have seen this be done in several SharePoint sites.
If you look at the site, you can see that the breadcrumbs have a different style when the site is being customized.
You can use a custom master page and CSS to make this happen.
I’ve already made mention of this book in my earlier review of Tim Minchin’s “Powerpoint!”. Read that review first if you haven’t, because I’ve brought up many points that will make you want to read the book.
The Creative Forces is not a book for the the faint of heart. Minchin wants to stir up a lot of emotions. He’s accomplished that task. He wants the reader to think about the nature of creation in a spiritual and religious context.
The Bible has long been dismissed by the atheist as not having the answers, but it is a great place to start the discussion. (I’m sure someone has written a book on this subject.)

Top Nav is a view. As with all Views, it’s customizable and can do a number of things.
In SharePoint 2007, you could add a view to a site collection, and then display it for the entire site collection in the upper left corner of the page. In SharePoint 2010, that does not work.
Instead, you can create a custom webpart, or add other aspects to your existing webpart, so that when a user views the site collection, they’ll see that view in place of the default site navigation.

SharePoint 2010 top nav lists work just like SharePoint 2007 top nav lists. They sit behind a link, and you can manipulate them just like any list. They’re not unique to SharePoint 2010.
SharePoint 2010 top nav lists allow you to provide a set of sites a user can navigate to, and also create a link for each site (a hyperlink in a webpart, or link in a webpart or masterpage) to that site’s view. There are two types of top nav lists:

SharePoint Web Part Navigation Lists
I don’t like SharePoint 2010 top nav lists. My primary reason for disliking them is this:
Their current implementation (in SharePoint 2010) breaks the navigation model. They don’t work with site collections.
Hence I would only recommend using SharePoint 2010
